Kappa League at Sac State Oct. 2, 2010

Sacramento Alumni Kappa League is now accepting membership applications for fall 2010. Our orientation meeting will take place on September 25th and applications may be turned in at this time. The initial meeting with the young men will be conducted on October 23rd.

Through club oriented activities, Kappa League performs projects that will expose the young men to professional networks, participate in structured lessons and teach leadership characteristics designed to raise their aspiration levels. All activities and programs are modeled around the following five phases:

(1) Self Identity

(2) Training

(3) Competition

(4) Social/Community Service

(5) Health Education

Nupes Celebrate King's Dream, Prepare for Obama's Inauguration

On January 19th, Kappas and Kappa Leaguers in the Sacramento area participated in the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march. Starting at Sacramento City College, the brothers joined the other NPHC organizations on a 3.5 mile march past the State Capitol to the Sacramento Convention Center.

This day's march was special, as many participants came out to answer the national call to public service by Barack Obama, who would be inaugurated as the 44th President of the United States on the following day.

Team Kappa Runs to Feed the Hungry

On Thanksgiving morning, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi helped support those who need a hand. Brothers from Sacramento Alumni and Iota Beta joined a record crowd of more than 28,000 to support the Sacramento Food Bank's 15th annual "Run to Feed the Hungry", held on the campus of California State University, Sacramento and the neighborhood of East Sacramento.

Thanks to "Team Kappa"--Brothers Anthony Brockington, Ken Davis, Will Grey, Nick Jackson, Talib Murray, Stephen Nichols, Ed Sanders, BJ Snowden, and Torry Winn--for getting up early on a holiday morning to support the cause!

Kappas Tailgate for 55th Annual Causeway Classic

On November 8th, the Brothers at Sac State and UC Davis hosted a pre-game tailgate party before the 55th Annual Causeway Classic football game between the Hornets and the Aggies. The game was the first Causeway Classic played at the newly built Aggie Stadium.

The Iota Beta (Sac State) and Iota Sigma (UC Davis) Chapters invited students from each campus, and extended the invitation to all Brothers in the Sacramento area, including alumni from Iota Beta and Iota Sigma.

Sacramento Alumni would like to thank Brothers Talib Murray and Nic Jackson of Iota Beta (Sac State) and Brother Wayne Lindsay of Iota Sigma (UC Davis) for extending hospitality and hosting a great event. Also, a special thanks to Brother Roger Warrick (Iota Beta, 1979) for holding down the grill!

Kappas Participate in HBCU activities

Sacramento hosted the Capitol City Football Classic from September 11-13. The weekend celebrated Historically Black Colleges and Universities, including a scholarship fundraiser, a step show, a college fair, and culminated with a football game and battle of the bands between Texas Southern University and Shaw University.

On Thursday, brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi attended the U-CAN Go To College Network's 20th Annual Scholarship, held in the Downtown Sheraton Grand Hotel. Among the brothers in attendance were Lyn Corbett, Cliff Jones, Walter Jones, Ed Lewis, Stephen Nichols, Ed Sanders, Reggie Sears, Sherod Thaxton, Roger Warrick, Frank Withrow and Leroy Worthy.

At Friday night's step show, the Nupes took home first place. Congratulations to Alex Baker--a recent graduate of Iota Beta (Sac State) and a Masters student at Nu Sigma (Cal State East Bay)--and his step team!

On Saturday, the brothers of Sacramento Alumni hosted a tailgate party prior to the football game and, once the game was over, the brothers of Roseville Alumni hosted a hospitality suite.

Thanks to all of the brothers who made sure that Kappa was well-represented this weekend; when we put our hearts into it, we can support education, win step shows, and have fun...all at the same time!

Sac Alumni begins Father/Daughter Tradition

By definition, a fraternity is an organization of men, and we tend to focus on the achievements of future generations of young men. However, Kappas recognize the value that women have on our lives and to society in general.

With this in mind, the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi want to be very intentional in recognizing and nurturing our daughters. On April 26th, the Saturday after national "Take our Daughters to Work Day", Sacramento Alumni hosted its first annual Father/Daughter Luncheon.

Held at Earl Grey Manor Tea Salon Nonpereil, brothers met for lunch and introduced their daughters to one another. Everyone had a good time; after the lunch, brothers had an opportunity to take advantage of all that historic Old Sacramento has to offer, including the museums, shops, and tours. Thanks to all of the dads and daughters who made it out to this inaugural event; we're really looking forward to next year!

Nupes Get Together for March Madness

On April 7th, brothers got together after work at Stonegrill and Bar to watch the Kansas University Jayhawks and the University of Memphis Tigers play for the 2008 NCAA men's basketball championship.

Kappas and their guests enjoyed good food & drink, and a great game, capped by a late three-point shot to send the game to overtime, where the Jayhawks were victorious.

Sacramento-Area Brothers Do Well at the 61st Western Province Council

On April 3rd through 6th, the Western Province held its 61st Council meeting in Los Angeles, and brothers from the Sacramento area were well-represented.

This year's Western Province Council was attended by nine brothers from Sacramento Alumni--Ken Davis, Lynn Greer, Will Grey, Stephen Nichols, Ed Sanders, Reggie Sears, BJ Snowden, Frank Withrow, and Leroy Worthy. Also in attendance were Brothers Larry Cook and Merrell Wilson from Roseville Alumni, and four brothers from the Iota Beta Chapter (Sacramento State).

The council began on Thursday with an initiation of 45 brothers into Kappa Alpha Psi, including Sacramento Alumni neophyte Stephen Nichols. Congratulations Brother Nichols!

When business sessions began on Friday morning, the chapter got to work. Brothers Davis, Grey, and Snowden represented the chapter as delegates, while Brother Greer manned the Kappa Golf Association's vendor booth to raise funds for the organizaiton's Guide Right program. Brother Davis co-chaired the Nominations Committee, and Brother Sears represented the chapter in the Resolutions Committee. Later that evening, Brother Sanders called the Council's public meeting to order, where community leaders were recognized for their achievements.

On Saturday, Brothers Davis, Grey, and Sanders chipped in to sponsor the Iota Beta brothers' attendance at the Kappa Foundation luncheon.

When the Achievement Commission presented awards at the closed banquet, Sacramento Alumni and its members did well. Brother Greer, Founder and Executive Director of the Kappa Golf Association, was presented with the Western Province's highest individual achievement honor for alumni members--the Randall C. Bacon Alumni Achievement Award--for his outstanding reclamation and community service achievements through the Golf Association.

Sacramento Alumni received the Edward D. Shelton Reclamation Award for the highest percentage of reclaimed brothers, and was given an honorable mention for the James O. Whaley Alumni Chapter Award, which was won for the third straight year by Phoenix Alumni, the reigning national chapter of the year.

At the end of the closed banquet, the Past Grand Polemarch Howard L. Tutman swore in the newly elected Province officers; Iota Beta Polemarch Talib Murray was elected Province Strategus, and Brother Sanders was re-elected to the Western Province Board of Directors.

2008 Scholarship Announced

The Sacramento Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi is pleased to announce its 2008 scholarship for college-bound high school students.

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

attend a Sacramento-area high school
retain a cumulative 2.0 GPA or greater
attend a four-year university no later than February 15, 2009

Kappas Help Fight Childhood Disease

Once again, Kappa Alpha Psi has made a commitment to assist St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in its efforts to fight catastrophic childhood diseases.

St. Jude is one of the world’s premier centers for research and treatment of diseases in children. In addition to treating pediatric cancers, St. Jude has one of the largest pediatric sickle cell research and treatment programs in the world.

The first desegregated hospital in its region, no child is denied treatment at St. Jude based on race, religion or a family's ability to pay.

The Sacramento Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi has partnered with Faith Fellowship Community Church to collect a love offering for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Details of the event can be found below:

Nupes March at MLK Day

Kappas from the Sacramento-area gathered on the morning of January 21st, 2008 to join a crowd of 10,000 people and march from the Oak Park community center to the state capitol.

Brothers brought Kappa Leaguers, family members, and children from a group home to celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work for civil rights.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, or just want a chance to have a good time for the holidays, the fourth annual Krimson and Kreme Christmas Party and Toy Drive is going to be the place to be!

All brothers and their guests are welcome to attend. Each person is asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy (valued around $10) or $10 so that we can purchase additional toys. All collections will be contributed to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento.

Sacramento Nupes Celebrate Iota Beta's 30th

On November 17th, 2007, brothers joined together to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the chartering of the Iota Beta of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. at California State University, Sacramento.

Brothers traveled from the Bay Area, Southern California, Texas, and Delaware to celebrate three decades of honorable achievement at Sac State. All told, 18 Iota Beta pledge lines were joined by brothers from Sacramento Alumni, Roseville Alumni, and Mu Omega.

Rather than having a traditional keynote speaker, brothers from each of IB's decades spoke on behalf of their respective decades. Perrish Geary represented the latest generation; Montie Rattler spoke about the middle generation; and Heyman Matlock discussed the chapter's early years. In a true act of fraternity, Brother Matlock paid homage to Richard Harris, the brother whose vision made Sacramento Alumni (1974) and Iota Beta (1977) a reality.

During the evening's awards program, Brothers Matlock (1976) and Forrest Williams Jr. (1991) were recognized for the distinction serving as presidents of Associated Students Inc. (ASI) while at Sac State, while Larry Lewis (1989) was acknowledged for his extraordinary service to Iota Beta.

To cap off the event, Iota Beta presented a check to the Sacramento Achievement Foundation for the establishment of a building fund. It is the chapters' hope that all brothers in the greater Sacramento area will support this fund so that, in the near future, we can have a place to call "home".

Sacramento-Area Kappas Fight Hunger

As the holiday season approaches, we are reminded of all that we should be thankful for.

To put those sentiments into action, members of Kappa Alpha Psi will join together at Sac State on November 22nd to participate in the Sacramento Food Bank's 14th Annual Run to Feed the Hungry, one of many national "turkey trot" fundraisers held on Thanksgiving morning. Based in the Oak Park neighborhood, the Sacramento Food Bank provides a variety of services for people in need.

Don't be fooled by the term "run" (or even "trot"). With a few exceptions, most of the roughly 15,000 participants treat the event as an opportunity to take a leisurely walk through the beautiful neighborhood of East Sacramento.

Kappas, friends, and family are encouraged to join us as we make room for turkey & stuffing by starting the day off with a 5K (3.1 mile) walk. Registration is just $30 and includes a souvenir t-shirt (ignore the more expensive "team member" options; they are for corporate team packages).

Too busy basting the bird to get out of the house that morning? Not a problem. Folks can participate in several other ways, including:

register as a "virtual runner" (includes a souvenir t-shirt), or
make a tax-deductible donation on behalf of the Kappa team (any contribution helps; all proceeds benefit Sacramento Food Bank Services)

Keeping our Commitment in 2007/2008

October marks the beginning of Kappa Alpha Psi's fraternal year.

Sac Alumni has planned some exciting things for the 2007/2008 year, including:

establishment of a college scholarship
raise funds to benefit the Sacramento Food Bank
conduct a Christmas toy drive
celebrate Founders' Day & Sac Alumni's charter day
host monthly lunches and socials for brothers
support undergraduate events, including
Iota Beta's 30th anniversary celebration

Additionally, Sac Alumni will continue to support local events and organizations, such as the 100 Black Men's Northern California African-American Young Males Conference.

To accomplish these things, Kappa needs the participation of all. In the words of our 31st Grand Polemarch, Dwayne M. Murray, "we will know the measure of our achievements when our work meets the intersection of our promises."

The chapter has adopted a calendar and a fiscally responsible budget to get 2007/2008 off to a good start. Brothers' contributions of time, effort and finance will help to ensure that Kappa is what we say it is. Join us in helping to keep Kappa's Commitment!

A New Black Theatre Company in Sacramento...with a Kappa Connection

Kendra Lewis, Brother Julius Lewis' better half, recently began a new African-American theater company called Voices of California for Diversity, Arts & Culture. Prior to founding Voices of California, Silhouette Lewis, a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., oversaw the Sacramento Theater Company as Managing Director.

Voices of California has an exciting schedule planned. This month the company will present Emergence-See!, a one-man show that has received widespread praise throughout the country. Emergence-See! will run on September 19th and 20th at the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center in Natomas.

Over the next few months, Voices of California will produce several more shows. In October, it will show Nat King Cole & Me--a musical about a young Bakersfield boy who, in absence of his father, turns to music as an escape. The show premiered in Denver last year to great reviews. Brother Lloyd "Corn" Porter, a 1992 Upsilon initiate, plays a role in the play.

October also brings Hallelujah City, a new musical by the people who brought Evangelize!, and the Martin Luther King Project's production of And the Dream Goes On to Sacramento last year.

February production includes a drama called The Bluest Eye, based on a Toni Morrison novel.

Kappa Golf Association's Junior Golf Guide Right Program featured on News10

Sac Alumni's own Brothers Lynn Greer and Mike Craft have been puting in a lot of work with the Kappa Golf Association since the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization was founded here in Sacramento in 2005.

Meeting twice a week for the past four months, the Kappa Golf Association's Junior Golf Guide Right Program has drawn a lot of attention both locally and nationally. News10 stopped by Haggin Oaks Golf Complex on a Tuesday evening to see what the buzz was all about; you can see the news story below.

Kappa Family Day 2007

Sacramento Alumni hosted its 1st Annual Kappa Family Day on August 18th at William Land Park.

Brothers started the day early off with 9 holes of golf, then stepped off the course to join their families for a barbecue lunch. Brothers from Iota Beta and Roseville Alumni joined Sac Alumni and everyone had a great time! In the afternoon, a toast was given to Brother Reggie Sears who, freshly back from his Caribbean honeymoon, provided some fine Dominican cigars.

If the inaugural event was any indication, this is going to be a day that is eagerly anticipated every year!

Nupes Roll Out the Red Carpet for the AKAs

When the Far Western Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority asked the brothers to participate in their Regional Conference on August 8 - 12, the Nupes didn't hesitate to step up.

On Thursday, Sacramento and Roseville Alumni chapters co-hosted a hospitality suite. Brother Lynn Greer made some of his notoriously tasty Cajun comfort food, including gumbo, chicken, and sweet potato bread, while Brother Joe Brown put his professional bartending skills to work to serve pink and green cocktails for the ladies.

The following evening, Polemarch Ed Sanders welcomed the ladies at their public meeting, where the Kappas were the clear winners in the friendly battle amongst the fraternities to impress their hosts. In the community awards portion of the program, the 100 Black Men of Sacramento were recognized for thier work; the award was accepted by their president, Brother Darryl Jenkins.

The conference culminated on Saturday with a formal banquet and ball. Keynote speaker and Alpha Phi Alpha member Dr. Cornell West was joined by Brother Tavis Smiley, who flew in from Los Angeles for the event.

Thanks to everyone who helped put Kappa's best foot forward to show the AKAs a good time, particularly Brothers David Mack, Kevin Hale, George Wells, George Blue, Brod Boyd, James Reede, Geoff Evans, Alex Baker and Dan Fontenot.

Kids run the bases after the game
Free admission to another game
(Mon. - Wed. games w/presentation of expired ticket)

2nd Downtown Kappa Lunch

Following the success of the first downtown Kappa lunch, the brothers got together again to break bread...or tortillias.

Vallejo's Taqueria and Cantina was chosen for its award-winning, authentic Mexican food.

Nupes "Represent" at NPHC Picnic

Officially, summer doesn't begin until June 21st, but that didn't stop the Nupes from breaking out their barbecues and dominoes for the Sacramento NPHC picnic.

On June 2nd, 2007, more than 20 area brothers joined the other fraternity and sorority members of "the Divine 9" at Elk Grove Regional Park for a day of food, family and fun.

The day wasn't just for adults; games were set up for the kids. And...speaking of kids...ask Brother Greer about the neophyte who sent him packing at the dominoes table!

But, in all seriousness, everyone had a good time. Special thanks to Sandi Patterson of Delta Sigma Theta for organizing the event!

Downtown Kappas Do Lunch

Sacramento's downtown area is home to many businesses and government agencies. From Dixon to El Dorado Hills, from Rocklin to Galt, many people make the daily commute downtown to "bring home the bacon".

Kappas are no exception; there at least 20 brothers who work within a one-mile radius of the state capitol, including Assemblymembers Mike Davis and Mervyn Dymally.

With so many Kappas in such a concentrated area, it was only a matter of time before brothers formally got together to break bread and share "the good ol' Kappa Spirit". Frank Fat's Resturant was selected and, on May 1st, 2007, the brothers got together for some of Sacramento's best Chinese food.

In attendance and pictured above (from left to right) were: Larry Lewis (Iota Beta 1989), Ed Lewis (Kappa Psi 1990), Forrest Williams (Iota Beta 1991), Vann Smith (Iota Beta 1979), Ed Sanders (Iota Beta 1993), James Reede (San Jose 1985), Russell Stiger (Iota Beta 1981), and Aaron Roberson (Beta Psi 1984).
